Ingredients:
- 1.5 cups ketchup
- 0.5 cup apple cider vinegar
- 0.25 cup molasses
- 0.25 cup dark brown sugar, packed
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp smoked paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 0.5 tsp black pepper
- 0.25 tsp cayenne pepper
- 0.5 tsp salt
Instructions:
- Combine the ketchup, apple cider vinegar, molasses, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce in a saucepan. Whisk vigorously while cold to ensure the brown sugar is fully broken down and the molasses is evenly distributed.
- Stir in the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, cayenne, and salt. Whisk until the spice blend is fully incorporated and no dry clumps remain.
- Place the pan over medium low heat.
- Bring the mixture to a very gentle simmer. Note: Avoid a hard boil, as the sugars can break or burn.
- Stir frequently for 8–10 minutes.
- Watch for the color change. The sauce is ready when it transitions to a deep mahogany color.
- Check the thickness. It should coat the back of a spoon in a smooth, silky layer.
- Remove from heat immediately.
- Let it cool for 5 minutes before bottling. It will thicken slightly more as the temperature drops.
